Widow's Peak - Colorado, 1995
After a day's work documenting the historic Denver Ordnance Plant, I found myself photographing atop this peak. I was focused on a view to the south when a rainstorm approached. I took refuge under the dark cloth along with my 4"x5" Zone VI camera. After the storm, I looked to the west and saw this scene which was completely uninteresting to me with the previously clear sky. I swung the camera around and proceeded to take four more images before the clouds disappeared almost entirely. Only one image was to my liking. Taken with Kodak T-Max 100 film, 90mm lens and #12 filter, developed in HC110 dilution B and tray processed. This negative was slightly damaged and is a challenge to print. Several masks are used in making this print to achieve proper contrast, shadow detail, sharpness and to bring out the dramatic clouds.

Red Rock - Pennsylvania, 2015
This was a cold day. For years I drove by this scene on the Susquehanna River but never could find a vantage point to make an interesting photograph that was not blocked by the trees. in 2015, I was taking my young niece from Texas out for a little photo adventure and decided to climb down the steep embankment and give it a try. With one sheet of 5x7 film for my 1907 Seneca View camera, I somehow found the perfect spot. It prints best on Kentmere Grade 3 which, sadly, is no longer available. Ilford Galerie 3 is my next choice, but also no longer available. The variables of traditional photography are constantly changing.

Taken with a Pentax 6x7 medium format camera during my days in Baltimore.
Gas Cap - Baltimore, 1990
Taken with a Zone VI 4x5 view camera four feet away from my back door in Baltimore.
    Mannequins - Chicago, 1984
This photograph, taken through a storefront window in Chicago with a 35mm Minolta SRT-101 camera, initiated my education in fine printing. I was taking a photography class during my undergraduate studies and we were expected to submit two photographs for display in an upcoming exhibit. I worked on this print in what may have been the dirtiest darkroom in the Midwest. I had just read Ansel Adams' treatise: "The Print" and I went through nearly an entire 100-sheet box of original Oriental Seagull before obtaining the perfect (or so I thought) balance of exposure, dodging and burning. I revisited this print in 2015 and I think it is vastly improved.
Meløy - Norway, 2011
The island of Meløy lies off the coast of Norway opposite Ørnes above the Arctic Circle. While with my family visiting cousins, I carried my Pentax 6x7 around just about all the time. I used Kodak T-Max 100 film and #12 filter.
